Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartWorkshop for kids: Masked ball17H00 – 21H00
Drawing inspiration from the artwork of the Irish-born British painter Francis Bacon's Three Studies for Portrait of George Dyer, we design masks with exaggerated expressions using recycled materials such as fabrics, feathers, yarn and colourful stickers.
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartPerformance: Francis Bacon talks to Francis Bacon. A short self-dialogue18H30 | 20H30 | 22H30 | 23H30 (EN)
Francis Bacon revolutionised 20th century painting. Inspired by his world-famous interviews, the performance Francis Bacon talks to Francis Bacon is a fictitious soliloquy about excess, fear, faith, death, beauty and the question of whether or not it’s important to be able to draw well as a painter. Created by the Luxembourgish director Thierry Mousset and featuring the actor Kristof van Boven, the piece offers visitors a fascinating insight into Bacon’s intellectual world and artistic work at the Museum Night.
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartFilmscreening: "25 de Abril de 1974, Quinta-feira" (30’)Ongoing
Based on photographs by Alfredo Cunha and a soundtrack specially created by Rodrigo Leão, the film 25 de Abril de 1974, Quinta-feira, was commissioned by the Comissão Comemorativa 50 anos 25 de Abril in Portugal with the aim of making the country's recent history more widely accessible to the general public. The film, which follows the structure of Alfredo Cunha's book of the same name published this year by Tinta-da-China in the context the 50 years anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, is divided into three chapters: “Guerra” (War); “Dia 25 de Abril” (The Day of 25 April) and “Depois de Abril” (After April).

Grupo Pilon is a Cape Verdean band that was founded in the 1980s by young people in the railway station district of Luxembourg City. They are children of the first Cape Verdeans who came to Luxembourg in the 1970s. Their style of music is called “Funana” and comes from the island of Santiago where this style of music was banned at the time of the Portuguese colonisation as it was considered subversive.
The band, which consists of self-taught musicians, are now known for their unique style. In their 40-year career, they have played countless gigs in Cape Verde, in the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and the UK and were signed by the New York record label Ostinato Records.
On 21 September 2024, their new album Nu sta li (We are here), was released at the Rockhal Belval.
With Ambrosio Gomes - bass guitar/voice, Tony Furtado - drums/voice, Fernando Gonzaga - guitar, Djoy d'Ninha - percussion, Pinto Monteiro – keyboard
- Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart"Coup de cœur" with Gilles Genot21H00 | 23H00 (LU)
As in previous years, each museum is offering a special guided tour called "Coup de Cœur." For this year's edition, seven external curators have been invited to present their favorite piece in one of the seven museums. Each of them has taken the time to immerse themselves in the work of their chosen museum, ensuring a thoughtful and engaging presentation.
The Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart welcomes Gilles Genot, curator at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum since 2019. Genot has a doctorate in medieval history and as a specialist in the history of Luxembourg in the 15th and 16th centuries, he is what is known in German as a Vereinsmensch. With this in mind, he has designed an exhibition on Luxembourg's associative world. He has also directed exhibition projects on the contemporary reception of the Middle Ages, the figure of the Renaissance prince Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld and, more recently, the cultural and societal issues surrounding translation - exploring both the diversity of languages and the ‘words that are missing’, such as Vereinsmensch for French speakers.
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartGuided tour: Marc Henri Reckinger. Lëtzebuerger Konschtpräis 202417H30 (FR) | 19H30 (LU) | 21H30 (DE) | 23H30 (EN)
The Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart and the Nei Liicht and Dominque Lang art centres in Dudelange pay posthumous tribute to Marc Henri Reckinger (1940-2023), the winner of the Lëtzebuerger Konschtpräis 2024, a visual arts prize awarded by the Ministry of Culture every two years.
Reckinger was a pioneering force in Luxembourg's art scene. Driven by a libertarian spirit and an anti-conformist bent, he was among the first to explore forms of expression that were unusual in Luxembourg, such as pop art, hard edge and conceptual art in the late 1960s. His works are a cry of rebellion - against social injustice, against capitalism, against the establishment. This exhibition presents a selection of works emblematic of Marc Henri Reckinger's fierce commitment to art and politics, from national issues to international cultural policy. Discover the world of this this trailblazer, where art is tirelessly put at the service of the fight.
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartGuided tour: Supports/Surfaces. Notre collection à l’affiche17H15 (EN) | 19H15 (FR) | 21H15 (LU) | 23H15 (FR)
Delve into our extensive and diverse collection of works, which is particularly characteristic of this avant-garde movement, and find out how its pioneers, from Arnal to Viallat by way of Grand and Pagès, exerted a brief but decisive influence on the artistic landscape in France and beyond from the 1960s onwards.
By radically opposing the major trends of their time, both ideologically and aesthetically, the members of Supports/Surfaces rejected traditional mediums, deconstructed the codes of painting and explored new forms and techniques. They focus on the materiality of the medium, moving beyond the canvas to produce unusual and highly inventive works. Come and discover the forerunners of contemporary art in France!
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartGuided tour: La révolution de 1974. Des rues de Lisbonne au Luxembourg18H45 (FR) | 20H45 (EN) | 22H45 (FR)
The overthrow of the dictatorship in Portugal, seen from a Luxembourgish perspective, is at the heart of a major exhibition that opened at the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart on 25 April 2024, exactly fifty years after the Carnation Revolution. Luxembourg today is home to over 100,000 people whose lives have been shaped by these events (people of various nationalities and origins, from Portugal or the former Portuguese colonies). These are citizens who immigrated to the Grand Duchy in large numbers in the 1960s and 1970s, when Portugal was still under the dictatorship or embarking on the path to democracy following 25 April 1974.
- Nationalmusée um FëschmaartGuided tour: Alfredo Cunha, photographe. 50 ans de carrière17H45 (FR) | 19H45 (EN) | 21H45 (FR) | 23H45 (DE)
Not only did Alfredo Cunha (*1953) document the coup on 25 April 1974 at close quarters, he also witnessed the process of Portuguese decolonisation in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Cape Verde. In Portugal, he continued to cover the early days of democracy under the PREC (Revolutionary Process Underway, 1974-1975) for the press, before becoming the official photographer of two presidents of the Portuguese Republic: Ramalho Eanes and Mário Soares.
After a long career as a photographer and art director in the image department of several newspapers, he now works freelance and continues to work on various editorial projects following his first publication Raízes da Nossa Força (1972). The exhibition, which is organised by theme (25 April and Decolonisation, World, Portugal, Conflict, Religion and Portraits), is accompanied by a catalogue published by Imprensa nacional to mark the 50th anniversary of Alfredo Cunha's career.
